Operational Support
Operational Support is supervised by a Captain and includes the:
- Central records function
- Fleet maintenance
- Quartermaster
- Traffic unit
Central Records
Without the ability to document crimes and other infractions properly, members of the department could not bring offenses to the State's Attorney for resolution. The agency's central records process all incident reports, citations, and traffic crash reports.
Central Records is also responsible for maintaining accurate statistics that are sent to Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)/Uniform Crime Reports Department to monitor the crime index throughout the state.
Public Assistance in Obtaining Records
Members of Central Records assist the public in obtaining a copy of an incident report or calls for service, local records checks and insurance requests.
All incident reports, traffic citations, and other documents are kept in a document management system where they may be retrieved when needed. Incident reports where an arrest has been made are processed and disseminated to the State Attorney’s Office for prosecution, the Clerk of Court, and/or Juvenile Court Liaison Officer. Traffic crash reports are kept on file and the original is sent to the department of motor vehicles in Tallahassee.
Report Availability & Cost of Service
Copies of reports are available as law permits and at a cost allowed by law.
Fleet Maintenance
Although the City's fleet maintenance is under the purview of the Public Works Department, the Operational Support Captain liaisons with them for maintenance, procurement, and outfitting of all the department's fleet. The Police Department has in its fleet:
- All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs)
- Boats
- Cars
- Generators
- Light trailers
- Message boards
- A mobile command center
- Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs)
- Trailers
- Trucks
- Vans
Traffic Enforcement
Under Operational Support is the red-light enforcement program and the traffic unit. The Traffic Enforcement Unit is committed to minimizing the number of traffic accidents and making the roadways safer for our residents and visitors.
Equipment & Training
The unit consists of full-time traffic enforcement officers that utilize specialized equipment and training to make roadways safer, to include:
- Drug Recognition Experts (DRE) that are trained to recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs other than, or in addition to, alcohol
- An enclosed trailer with cones, signs, and barricades for DUI enforcement and other traffic enforcement needs
- An in-house breath testing room and associated equipment and operators; traffic homicide investigators and related reconstruction equipment
- Radar and laser speed measuring devices along with in vehicle camera systems
Budget & Finance Maintenance
Both the Operational Support Captain and the Administrative Support Captain monitor and maintain the nearly $10 million budget of the department, grant procurement and reporting, processing various bills and purchasing of equipment. The captains work closely with the City's finance department to ensure fiscal responsibility.
